Born in 1981 in Leonberg (Germany), Fischer received his first piano and percussion instructions at he age of nine. Since 2001 he has studied at the Freiburg Music University with Prof. Bernhard Wulff, Prof. Tajiro Miyazaki and Pascal Pons where he finished his diploma in 2006 and advanced studies in 2008.
Besides that, he has been pursuing studies in conducting (with Prof. Francis Travis) and composition (with Prof. Dieter Mack).
Fischer has received several prizes as a percussionist and composer, among them the 2nd prize at the International Günter-Bialas Composer's Competition 2002. He received scholarships from the Jürgen-Ponto-Stiftung Franfurt, the Märkische Kulturkonferenz and the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben.
With the “Eardrum Percussion Duo” Fischer won the German University Music Competition 2006.
As a soloist, he won the 1st prize at the German National Music Competition and the 1st prize , audience prize and 3 other special prizes at the 56. International ARD Music Competition in Munich.
With funding from the Gerd-Bucerius-Scholarship he was "artist in residence" at the University of California San Diego to work with Prof. Steven Schick in spring 2007.
Johannes Fischer has a busy concert schedule as a soloist and
chamber musician with the Freiburg Percussion Group, the eardrum
percussion duo, the duo d'accord, the duo Apeiron
(flute&percussion), and several frequent chamber music partners. He
has worked with composers or conductors such as Peter Eötvös, Harrison
Birtwhistle, Klaus Huber, Isabel Mundry, N.A. Huber, Heinz Holliger or
Johannes Fischer has performed at music festival throughout Asia, Northern America and Europe.
As a composer he was awarded several commissions, from the Crested Butte Music Festival USA, the Lucerne Festival Academy, the Freiburg Percussion Group, the Junges Klangforum Mitte Europa or the Louvre Paris in cooperation with the Lucerne Festival.
Johannes Fischer has been teaching percussion at the Conservatory of
Music in Lugano (Switzerland) since 2006 and since 2008 he is head of
the percussion department at the Lübeck University of Music.
In summer 2008 his debut CD was released on OehmsClassics with solo works by Pintscher, Lopez-Lopez, Druckman, Globokar and Xenakis.
